Lake Baikal is located in southern Siberia, Russia, near the city of Irkutsk. It is the deepest lake in the world, with a maximum depth of about 1, 642 meters, and the largest freshwater lake by volume, containing roughly 20% of the world's surface freshwater. Baikal is a unique ecosystem, home to hundreds of endemic plant and animal species, including the famous Baikal seal, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996
