Lake Baikal is located in southern Siberia, Russia, near the city of Irkutsk. It is the deepest lake in the world, with a maximum depth of about 1, 642 meters (5, 387 feet), and the largest freshwater lake by volume, containing roughly 20% of the world's surface freshwater. Its surface area spans approximately 31, 500 km² (12, 200 sq mi). Baikal is a unique ecosystem, home to hundreds of endemic plant and animal species, including the famous Baikal seal, and plays a crucial role in the region's climate and biodiversity. Due to its outstanding natural significance, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996
