The visual signal, known as the green ball, is mainly used on course vessels or fast ferries on Lake Constance and the neighbouring Rhine. According to shipping law, the ship has priority over other ships, including sailing boats, and may travel at increased speed without having to observe the usual right of way rules for sailing boats.
