Wood gas 1945. A man at a Shell service station fills more coal into the container to fuel the wood gas unit of a lorry. A natural feature during these years during the World War II was the Wood gasification unit on cars and trucks. Wood gas is a gas that results from the incomplete combustion of wood or coal, and was used to power vehicles. The driver had to fill up the coal himself and make sure that the combustion functioned as it should. Due to a lack of fuel during the Second World War, wood gas played a major role in keeping transport running. Kristoffersson ref N50-3
