Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - The Emscher has been completely free of wastewater since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river, shown here next to the A42 motorway, was previously an open, above-ground wastewater sewer, mixed sewer with surface water and wastewater. Bottrop harbour and Essen city harbour on the right of the Rhine-Herne Canal
