Henri Jacques Lebaudy, (Jacques I), Emperor of the Sahara, (born in Paris 1868 and died New York 1919) was a French adventurer who founded in 1903 the Sahara Empire. In June 1903, Lebaudy sailed to an area near Cape Juby on the Moroccan coast and proclaimed the 'Empire of the Sahara'. He had various projects for ruling and improving his new domain, but European governments disapproved of his venture, and some of his mercenaries were captured by local Moorish bandits. (They were rescued by a French warship).
