Caption

The Redoubtable in port in Brest, 1882. The Redoutable was the first warship to use steel as its primary construction material, although parts of it still consisted of wrought iron. The ship was launched in 1876 and would go on to serve until 1910. She was armed with seven breechloading 27 centimeter cannons, six breechloading guns of 14 centimeters, and some Hotchkiss revolving guns. She spent most of her career in the French mediterranean fleet, but was present in the 1901 negotiations that followed the Boxer Rebellion in China.
