The view of the west front of the Capitol, from what is now the National Mall, is rather pastoral. The Tripoli Monument, honouring American sailors during the Barbary Wars of 1804, was installed in front of the Capitol in 1831. John Rubens Smith trained as an artist in his native England and moved to the new republic around 1807. He documented the East Coast of the United States,
