William Pitt standing on the British crown, c.1795
Title

William Pitt standing on the British crown, c.1795

Caption

Constitution d'Angleterre [ca. 1795] print on green laid paper etching, hand-collared. Print shows a critical response to the British political system by showing Prime Minister William Pitt standing on the British crown, which is possibly being flattened by the weight of his authority; he is holding a flag that depicts implements of slavery, and has an executioners axe at his waist on the left and a tobacco pipe on the right, and in his left hand holds the chains of bondage that are connected to King George III, in the foreground on the right, and members of Parliament or members of the working class behind the king and on the left. There is a gallows on the left, a scaffold with an executioner holding an axe on the right, and billowing smoke filling the background.
