Fernando de Soto (c1496-1542) Spanish explorer and conquistador born at Xeres (Jerez) de los Caballeros, Estramadura, Spain. A member of the Spanish expedition to Darien (1518-1520), served in Nicaragua (1527) and assisted Pizzaro in the conquest of Peru. Appointed governor of Cuba by the Emperor Charles V and given permission to conquer Florida, where he landed in May 1539. Died of fever and was buried in the Mississippi River. Engraving.
