David Brewster (1781-1868) Scottish physicist. Optics (kaleidoscope and polarised light). Editor of the "Edinburgh Magazine" 1802 and the "Edinburgh Encyclopaedia" 1808. On the table beside him is a stereoscope, one of the optical instruments he invented.
