Caption

Arrival of the 'Great Western' at New York (1838). Steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) and built by William Patterson (1795-1869) of Bristol, which began a regular run between Bristol and New York in 1838. This was a steam-powered wooden vessel, capable of 12 knots under steam and, because of her engine and her ability to carry fuel for 26 days, it was possible to cut down her rigging. From "The Sea" by F. Whymper. (London, c1895). Artist, William Heysman Overend (British artist, 1851-1898)
