Hippocrates of Cos (c460-377 or 359 BC) Ancient Greek physician. [1866]. 'Father of medicine' who laid foundations of a scientific basis for medicine. Taught that the four humours (blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile) were main seats of disease. Engraving from "Vies des Savants Illustres" by Louis Figuier. (Paris, 1866). After antique bust in the Louvre, Paris.
