Young nomadic Fulani (also known as Peul) girls and women, togetherwith a peer educator, are seen at an educational centre in a nomadic settlement on the fringes of the Sahara in Dabaga west of Agadez in Niger on Monday Sept. 22, 2003. Niger is the second poorest country in the world. Nearly two-thirds of the population does not have sufficient income for their basic needs such as food, clean water, shelter and clothing. Average life expectancy is 46 years and over 80% of the population is illiterate. Women have little access to information and education. At least 90% of women are illiterate in Niger. Seventy percent of children in Niger work in some form or other, many already starting by the age of five. (Photo/Christine Nesbitt)
