The European visitor to Algiers can frequently obtain admis¬sion to the houses of the native gentry (of which there are still remnants, as in other lands where the white man has deposed the black), and nothing in connection with these villas strikes them more pleasantly that what is known as the “ court.” Here the coolness so necessary to a tropical climate is alone to be found, and here amidst marble columns, fountains, and broad-leaved plants, the master of the place spends the greater part of his day, and here he also invariably receives bis guests, especially if they are strangers, as such visitors are rarely allowed to enter the private portions of the house. The accompanying view shows us a picture of one of the best of these “ courts ”.
