Légende

The International Exhibition: "The Wounded Achilles", a plaster statue, by Carl Cauer, 1862. 'The action of Achilles endeavouring to extract the arrow from his heel, and his heroic expression "dignifying pain," are very good; but, in some respects, the model scarcely supports the sculptor's reputation, some parts of the anatomy not being correctly expressed. The occasional puffiness of the muscles might, it is true, disappear in the finished statue; but the extremities are too small, and there is too much weakness in the tendinous parts for the mighty hero of the "Iliad," making due allowance for his agility and swiftness'.
