Great Fire in Guildford-Street, Belvidere-Road, [London], 1850. '...a fire broke out in the extensive timber yard belonging to Mr. George Myers, of the Ordnance Wharf, Belvidere-road, which, in the extent of its ravages, has exceeded any catastrophe of the kind with which the metropolis has been visited for many years past...the flames had attained so great an ascendancy, that the atmosphere was illumined for miles round, and the utmost alarm was occasioned among the inhabitants of the neighbourhood...The awful progress of the fire for some minutes previously had forewarned the inhabitants of the danger to which they were exposed, and a very large quantity of furniture was hastily thrown out of the houses into the centre of the York-road, as the only chance of saving it from being reduced to ashes'.
