Study for the painting 'Bloody Sunday (22 January 1905)', 1905. The Russian Revolution of 1905 broke out after troops fired on protesters trying to deliver a petition to Tsar Nicholas II outside the Winter Palace in St Petersburg on 22 January 1905. 96 were killed according to official estimates, while the oppostion claimed the figure may have been as high as 4000. The events of what came to be known as Bloody Sunday sparked a rash of strikes and demonstrations across the country. Found in the collection of the State Museum of Revolution, Moscow.
